Bean, broad (Vicia faba)   Edit Report inappropriate crop

This easy to grow crop can provide delicious beans wrapped in their cosy, fleece-lined pods from late May until early October. Broad beans are of three types - dwarf, long-pod or Windsor which are best-suited to exposed sites, early sowing and flavour respectively.

Pick them young, both for a sweeter taste and to encourage further pods. If all you have are older beans, try blanching for a minute or two in boiling water and then squeezing the sweet halves of the bean out of their bitter coat.

Twist beans downwards to harvest when the beans are firm. Pick young as mature beans can be tough. Leave roots in the ground so that the nitrogen-fixing nodules can fertilise the next crop.

Prevent mice (wsjames - 00:27 01/12/2014) Report inappropriate tip
Coating broad bean seeds with chili powder paste really does reduce the rate of seed loss from mouse attack. In this trial I sowed two pairs of rows of broad bean Witkiem Manita in February. One pair was sown with seeds pre-coated in a slurry of hot chili powder (stabilized with cornflour) and the other without pre-treatment.See links below for images of the rows after germination. Without chili 4 out of 17 survived mouse attach. With chili treatment 11 out of 17 survived.https:docs.google.comfiled0BHFQUB87hstU2hqZEktWUVkcG8edit?uspsharinghttps:docs.google.comfiled0BHFQUB87hstYVZ6dVYteGtnU3Medit?uspsharing
